How do you re-string and increase the action on an acoustic bass guitar?

Q: This is kind of a two parter:

A) How do you re-string a acoustic bass guitar? I've done it on my electric but obviously it's different on my acoustic.

B) How do you increase the action on a acoustic bass guitar?

Feel free to use the terminology to be as exact as possible. Also any links to diagrams would be very helpful.

A: The ends of the strings are held by the pin in the bridge - loosen the old string - then carefully pull out the pin with a pin puller or pliers with the jaws padded. Take off the old string. Put the new string down the hole about 4 inches - put the pin back in and pull up on the string until you feel it catch between the pin and the bridge - the pin might be forced up so just push it back down till you feel the end of the string slide past it and lodge against the bridge. I have a cheap guitar that I would like to change to a bass guitar... I was recently told that this is impossible... What do you think? Has anyone out there ever done this?


A: The bracing beneath the sound hole is not set up to deal with the foot/lbs of tension generated by the heavier strings. For the same reason, an acoustical guitar cannot be fitted with steel strings. The tension on a set of 12 string guitar strings runs about 1200 lbs, compared to a light tension of acoustic strings. At the very least, you will likely pop the bridge off the face of the guitar. Secondly, the neck is not braced for the high tension and will probably warp. Steel string guitars...

I need to know exactly what kind of guitar to buy for my son, he is 15yrs old, never played but he is interested. Now I need to know the difference between the Acoustic, Bass, and Electric Guitar?


A: Accoustic Guitar-One of the most common guitars, it has 6 strings to be played with a pick or fingers (if you're doing octaves). Some can be plugged into amplifiers. The middle loudest between Bass, Electric, and Accoustic.

I have an acoustic/electric guitar and I need a way to get a bass guitar sound. Is it possible to swap in acoustic bass strings, or something of the sort?


A: That will be almost impossible, physically, and it would never sound right due to the length proportions for a good bass sound.

A better alternative, short of buying, renting, or borrowing a base, would be to simply get a synthesizer that lowers every tone two octaves.
I have a Zune 8-track mini recording studio, and one of the synthesized sound options is "bass emulator." It just drops every tone by two octaves. You can probably purchase a foot pedal or...
