Q: I'm thinking about buying an upright bass. I've been playing bass guitar for about 7-8 years. I'm new to the fretless scene, so I was wondering if anybody has any tips on buying a good upright bass. For example...
How can I test the intonation?
How can I tell if the neck is straight?
and any other tips are more than welcome.

A: There are a many things to look for when buying an upright. Set intonation, like octaves aren't lining up properly can be set better by adjusting within millimeters the bass bridge, this is luthier work, sometimes requiring a new bridge.

In upright playing "bad intonation" means the player can't find the exact location of the note.

upright bass doesnt have intonation.....fretless basses dont have intonation at all. intonation is fret related.

Um a good upright bass has tone. It feels good to play. It stays in tune well. I don't really know how to describe telling if the neck is straight, but the chances that it isnt is very unlikely, theyre not the same as bass guitars. They have no truss rod. I'd take along someone with you who knows upright basses. You should play a few yourself....

Transition from the electric to the upright bass?

I've recently gotten an upright bass. I'm familiar with theory, so my problems are more technical. I'm wanting to focus on jazz and rockabilly (slapping). What are some common issues (revolving around technique) I need to focus on and learn when going from the electric bass to the upright bass? What reading/video material can I buy or possible get for free off the Internet?


A: first issue is finger spread. You are going to want to do some finger exercises to get that left hand spread going. You can tape up the String Bass until you are used to the different style of playing. On upright bass, you are going to place your finger over the exact spot where the fret would be, if there was one. I have played upright string bass for almost five years, and our choral teacher just asked me if I would be willing to play bass for their select vocal jazz group. However, she would rather me play electric bass guitar. I'm just wondering if it is the same as upright bass, just turned on the side? I have never played bass guitar, but I know many of my fellow orchestral bassists play. :] Thanks a BUNCH...

I'm looking towards like John Pattitucci type kind of feel for my bass. I think a lighter tension string would be more ideal for me, but i dont know any brands or anything like that for upright strings
