What is the best digital media receiver that's under $250?

Q: I am looking for a DMR or a Media Center Extension (not sure what it's called) that will allow me to view mpeg, avi, divx, mkv etc on the TV. All the ones I found (like the D-Link DSM-520 etc) have some flaws in them. What do you people recommend? Thanks!
In addition would it be better just to get an Xbox 360 instead? Would that do the above functions?

A: 360 will do the above functions adiquetly as long as you ghave windows media center (either xp edition or vista premium or higher). Not sure how it will work with videos though. Non N class networks dont handel video very wll. what your lloking ofr is a media center extender, or a device that has media server functionality (ie. i have my ps3 do all this)

does any one know if the Alpine iDA-X001 Digital Media Receiver works with the iphone?

The quality is excellent, and the best part is that you click and you start watching; it is REALLY 0 waiting.
The other great feature is that you don't need a computer, so you just plug into your internet connection and you are good to go.
User interface is extremely simple. The remote is very unique and easy to use, since it has only 5 buttons.

How many HD channels are available for Comcast customers in California that don't have the digital receiver.

I'm thinking about getting a HD TV tuner card for my media center and I am wondering how many channels are actually HD, when not using the Comcast digital receiver.


A: Without the digital receiver, you can still receive what would normally be over-the-air (OTA) channels if your HDTV has a QAM tuner (most newer sets have this.)
