Q: I have a Sony DAV 500 home ent system. The dvd player is now causing trouble so i wish to replace it. My question is whether i can use the existing speaker wire (which goes under carpet) with any other system. Obviously each system has different connectors but can i just snip the speaker wire and reconnect to the new system??

A: Yes you can but make sure that the wire that you have running under the carpet is not broken or pinched.
If it is then it is best to replace the whole wire and not splice it because that is still a possible problem in the wire

Actually, yes. Unless you live in a theatre, the amount of power to your speakers is minimal. What you should check is the old system speaker preferred ohms.?? Some speakers are 4 ohm, some are 8, etc. Unless you are blasting the house, should be no problem. The only use for heavy speaker wire is for an LFE or 'woofer' speaker to handle the low frequency of a 5.1 surround sound system..

Is there a way to connect my old Sony 3 ohm speakers to my new receiver that is designed for 8 ohm speakers?

I read that I could wire a resistor in series with the speaker to bring up the impedance to 8 ohms. What would 5 ohm resistors wired in series do for the system? Would it be better to wire two 3 ohm speakers in series for each channel. This would only be 6 ohm resistance. The sony speakers are nice and I would hate to not be able to use them. Any suggestions?


A: Unfotunately no. You will need an amplifier or receiver that will double down as the impedance is cut in half. If the amp or receiver can double it's power from 8 Ohms to 4 Ohms, you should be okay, driving a 3-Ohm speaker system.

The speakers I have in my car are taking a crap...they really suck. The person I bought the car from left the Xplod cd player in there for me, but I want to get new speakers. Can anyone tell me what 4 x 6 speakers I could use? I would prefer use sony xplod speakers if I could. Thanks


A: Sony Xplod 4x6's would be good with your sony Xplod cd player. I have Xplod speakers in my front and back doors. The 4x6's are only 38.42 plus tax. for 2 of them
