Canon flash?

Q: I'm looking at buying a Canon Speedlite 430ex flash for my Canon Rebel XTI and I was wondering....do I have to worry about certain flashes not being compatable with my camera? I thought I once read that with canon lenses every lens was compatable as long as it was canon...is it the same with flashes?

A: I use the Canon 430ex on my XTi and it works great. It will work on the entire EOS line.

It will also come with me when I move to the XSi in April.

Oops, it is May. Bring on the new camera.

You shouldn't have any problems. All Canon flashes are compatible with Canon SLR/DSLR's. Have fun with your new flash :o)

Excellent choice. Just be sure to really READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual for the flash and the section in your camera's Owner's Manual on using flash.

I am a true believer in using the flash off-camera on a bracket. IMO that should be your next purchase.

A: Good question.

There are several ways to do this.
Unfortunately, I'm not as familiar with Canon line up, but quick search didn't reveal any dedicated flash that work with Canon. I know that Nikon's SB-600 and SB-800 flashes can be used with most current dSLR's as remote slaves triggered by onboard flash (the functionality is built right into the cameras) and they can be used at full TTL compatibility. Nikon calls this CLS, or Creative Light System.

A: Since your A650 IS has no hot-shoe, no external flash unit can be used with it.

It is rare that a P&S camera costing less than about $300 has a hotshoe to attache an external flash. When they do, they are dedicated to flash units designed for the brand of the camera ... in the case of Canon's, if the trigger voltage is over 6v, you run the risk of frying your...

A: It might be possible to use a Canon flash on manual. Part of Nikon's strength is in their iTTL flash system. Why would you want to give that up? Get a Nikon flash.
