What is the name for snap on lens accessories for point and shoot digital cameras? Are the worth while?

Q: I've got a Nikon Coolpix S610 on order. Under accessories on the Nikon site, there is a leather case listed that shows a snap on lens. But I don't see any description.

Any information about this camera specifically or these lenses in general would be appreciated.

A: The lenses shown in the link are called add-on lenses and are available for certain cameras, but sadly not yours.

They are used to extend the range of P&S cameras since there is no way to exchange lenses like DSLR's.

You can look for other Nikon Coolpix cameras and see which ones do have the ability to take add-on lenses.

The difference in costs between a P&S with two or three add-on lenses may cost more that just buying the Nikon D40 with 18-55...

Hi there i'm looking to buy a new lens for my Nikon D40x. I'm starting at sports photography, I just got field passes for the 2008 college football season.

What i need to know is what lens and or accessories are a must for this new career of mine.

I'm looking at getting the Nikkor 70-3oomm lens, But i'm up in the air and would love to hear all your imput.

A: That 70-200 is a super lens, but considering that you are still shopping for a camera, it might exceed your budget.

I guess I'd agree with you on the 70-300 lens as long as you get the VR version. I own it and it's an okay lens. If you have field passes, though, you might find that you are a bit cramped with no wider than 70 mm on a Nikon digital SLR. Check into the 18-200 VR. It's about on par with the 70-300 for sharpness, color and contrast and perhaps better...

A: Well, if you're only going to get one accessory lens, are you more interested in wide angle scenics, getting closer to your subject with the telephoto accessory lens or doing close-up macros of flowers or other objects with the macro? It's really up to you and the type of photography that you take!
