What is the best way to make a telescoping monopod?

Q: I want to make my own monopod but I'm not sure what materials to use to make a telescoping monopod. When I say telescoping; I mean a monopod that can have its length adjusted. I just want a nice monopod to use standing up, kneeling or sitting while shooting at whistle pigs without having to spend $30 or more to get a good one.

A: I don't understand why you're so cheap to the point where you won't buy your own. Anyone can easiliy make a homemade monopod, which is nothing but a metal stick with an attachment to the gun.

I would suggest you go buy one, but if you're not taking my advice, you should visit a pharmacy and get some adjustable crutches, then you find a way to weld the attackment to the gun with the adjustable bottom portion.

If you are set on making your own, find an aluminum crutch at a garage sale or Goodwill, Salvation Army store, etc. The kind you get when you break a leg. I have seen them at garage sales for a $1.

You can use the lower tube which adjusts as your adjustable base, cut off the rest and then build on that using some tubing, etc.

Also, you may look at a single leg from a broken camera tripod or even an adjustable curtain rod.

Have wife stand in front, put rifle over her shoulder. For adjustments say out loud, "UP" "DOWN" "RIGHT" "LEFT" or "THE OTHER LEFT" The price is very low, just feed her once in a while and put in the shower often.

For those who are going to answer that the tripod has 3 legs and the monopod just one, I know that. I want to know when to use one and when to use the other. Thanks.


A: Tripod is more stable and best for long exposures. Monopod is more mobile and best for situations with long lenses when you are trying to steady the camera but need to move it often.

I'm looking for a tripod or monopod that is versatile and practical. Any suggestion is appreciated. In order of importance:

Easy to set up shots.
Stable and secure
Easy to carry.
A good height.
Not expensive.

A couple weeks ago, I picked up a monopod for $15 at a big box store. I finally hauled it out the other day and I have to say that it makes a huge difference. I get much less shake under low light/long exposures.
