Quantaray QB-6500A flash with Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi?

Q: I just bought a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi camera and I have a Quantaray QB-6500A flash unit left over from my EOS Rebel XS film camera days. The flash has a "CN AF" module on it, which is only TTL compatible, not E-TTL, and the XTi won't fire the flash. Is there a module available to make this flash unit work with Type A (E-TTL) Canon EOS digital cameras, or should I just buy a Canon Speedlite?

A: Ive read that you shouldnt use the older film flashes with digitals cause they can zap your digital they require more power and if it feeds back your going to fry the computer in the new camera.

Id buy a new flash you spent all that money on a new camera midaswell get a good flash too

A: Probably not. Check with your local camera store.

You'll be much better off getting the Canon flash designed for your camera. Since your camera has E-TTL off-sensor flash metering you'll want a flash that is compatible. Buy the top of the line flash offered for this camera*. Buy the off-camera flash bracket with it.

* In my experience its always better to have a feature and not need it than to need it and not have it. You know - like side curtain air bags.

What is a good flash (cost effective) for a Nikon D40?

Written by babyblueangel_30 | Sunday, June 10, 2007

I want to have a good professional flash but I don't have a lot of money. If I did, I'd get the SD800. I'm thinking about getting a Quantaray flash or some other knock off flash. Is that a bad idea?

A: If you ever plan on wanting to control multiple flashes from off camera, buy the SB-800 now for the commander mode, which the D40 lacks.

If you are not going to use the flash off the hot shoe, then an SB-600 should be enough to fit the bill.

What do I need to set up a remote flash?

Written by johnnyculbrethjr | Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Hey guys,
Im kind of new at the whole photography thing and I need to know what I need to buy to set up a remote flash. I shoot with a Nikon D70s and have a Quantaray QF30 flash.
Im not sure if there is like a start up kit or anything.
Please let me know what I need to get and where I can get it.

Thanks!

A: I setup remotes using several PocketWizard MultiMAXes, I'm not sure about this, but Quantaray equipment is usually budget equipment, so it may not even be cable of being fired remotely without buying some kind of Hot Shoe Flash Trigger. Once you have this, you can either use the flash on your camera if the trigger is optical, or you could hook up a PocketWizard to the PC Sync port on the trigger and another PocketWizard would go on the hot-shoe on your camera.
