Q: I'm planning on getting an HD camcorder and need some help.
Can you mention some good camcorders in the market right now? *about 1000$*
Which format is best, i heard that everytime you open a video from hdd camcorders it loses quality. is that true?
Also, is there a big enough loss when burning to dvd that it would be better just to buy a standard camcorder? Also would it be so much better to get Blu-Ray instead? Are blu-ray writers going to go down in price any time...

A: Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7, HC9.

In your price range, HDV compresses least - resulting in best available video quality.

Video compression = discarded data = reduced video quality. Hard drive and flash memory hidef cams that save using AVCHD compress a LOT. The video is still better than standard definition DV, but there will be degradation as compared to HDV.

That's a lot of good questions there, so I will attempt to answer them. First of all, yes, HD products will come down in price as they enter the mainstream, I expect by 2012 or so. This includes HD cameras too. So, yes, a Blue-Ray burner and player is a bit out the of question right now, but I would not recommend getting an HD DVD player and burner. For one thing, they are on their way out with Blue Ray winning the format war, and they are also not nearly as good.

I'm planning to go snowboard this year and i don't have a camcorder. So i was viewing many different types of camcorders and I found some that are high definition and they are not very expensive. So i want to know how this deal of sd cards work. I couldn't find any info in the camcorder's technical details about how much video it records. The SD card technical detail does not say anything either. So if anybody that knows a little about this can help me, i will appreciate it....


A: Hi, on a 4Gb SD Card, you can store 60 minutes of data with High Quality, but if u reduce the pixel setting it can go upto 90min also, which is sufficient,
also allways carry extra Batteries, and memory card... this will help u,
I think u should go for Panasonic hdc-sd1, this is a really good HD Camera.... price is a bit high around 750, but worth putting the money,

Is it pointless to get a HD camcorder when owning a Mac?

There are a lot of compatibility issues when attempting to put HD video onto a Mac to edit. I know there are ways around it but from what I understand, when burning to a DVD it converts it to SD format anyway. (Unless I went the blue ray route. Which I don't want to do) So, is it pointless to get a HD camcorder if i'll never end up seeing the video in HD. Or is it a better quality because it was shot in HD regardless of the fact that it was converted to SD?


A: It's VERY useful to edit HD on a Mac. Here's the deal.

1.) Yes, when you burn it to a DVD, it will convert it to SD. But HD downconverted to SD still looks better than things shot on SD. Look at any Hollywood DVD. They look better than your home movies, yes? ;) Even though they're the same resolution!

2.) I'm sure someday you'll buy a Blu-Ray burner, and if you do, you'll then be able to burn all your stuff, and you'll be happy you had...

Where's the best place to start lookin for an HD camcorder?

I want to purchase a HD camcorder that i can hook to my DVD recorder to burn the video directly there and Id like to of course get the best deal I can on one. Anyone have any suggestions on a store or web site to start looking?
