How do I capture video from my Sony Hi8 camcorder?

Q: I have a Sony TRV128 Hi8 video camcorder. I am trying to figure out how to put the videos onto my computer. I have tried a few types of connections, but the computer does not recognize the camcorder. The camcorder does not seem to have a firewire port, although it does have S video. Thank you!

A: Any computer wud ONLY import/upload DIGITAL video/files. It wud require then that your ANALOG Hi-8 video shud first be converted to DIGITAL. Check this out..

If this is an analog camcorder, then you need an analog converter.

Should i stick with my old hi8 camcorder or should i get a new miniDV camcorder?

My hi8 camcorder takes pretty good picture and sound but the problem is getting it onto my computer for editing. I'm having troubles finding a good capture device that would work with Vista. My birthday is coming up and i am thinking of getting a capture device but i am not sure if i should just get a refurbished sony handycam for $175. What do you think i should do?


A: Hi8 is still good unless you have the Hi8 camcorder with the the fire-wire port or usb ports to connect with the computer.

I still use mine, but going to upgrade soon. I'm just transferring all my tapes to dvd for backup purposes.

I would definitely not spend to much and put your money to a new camcorder.

How do I transfer HI8 camcorder tape to disc?

I have an old camcorder and am using Hi8 tapes how can I transfer the tapes to disc? I have got WindOWS XP on my system at home, any ideas?


A: You have to have a device that will play Hi8 tapes to begin with. If you do have an old camcorder or something that will play them, and has a video output jack, you then only need a way to record them on your PC.

You will need a video card in your PC with an analog video input. You will play the camcorder and record on your pc. Then you can just burn to a disc.

Or you could just take it to wal-greens or some camera store, and they can do it for you.

I have a Hi8 tape for my camcorder and I taped my newborn's birth with it. The camera isn't a digital camcorder, but I know that you can take it somewhere to transfer it to a computer. Analog format to digital format. I can't buy anything because I don't have any money to buy it lol. Can I take it to a photographer? Where do I take it to do this?


A: It would be cheaper to buy an analog converter than take it someplace, and the converter (around 50.00) would be a one time buy. I have the dazzle and I can hook up my old analog video camera or hook up a VCR to it and download it to the computer, unfortunately when going from analog to digital you do lose some quality.
Another thing is to check your cable company, they sometimes offer a transfer service, again this can cost you some money too.
