professional camcorder?

Q: I'm new to digital camcorders, however i've got extensive experience doing audio engineering work.

What type of camcorder would you recommend for someone who would like to be a serious hobbyist with the possibility of turning it into a small business making documentary type DVDs?

I hear that the canon line is nice....I would like something with professional flexiblility without breaking the bank.

A: It depends on your requirements - and your budget...

But here is a short list to get youstarted:

High definition cameras (can also do Standard definition)
Canon HV20, HV30, XHA1
Sony HDR-HC7, HC9, HVR-A1U, V1U, Z1U
Panasonic HDX200

Standard Definition cameras:
Sony DCR VX2100
Canon GL2, XL2
Panasonic DVX100B

All of the above could be considered pro or "prosumer". All have mic-in...

What is a good professional camcorder for a beginner?

Im always making videos.. i use my regular camcorder but im looking for a professional one.. this will be my first pro one so any suggestions would help?


A: You *could* step into it. We don't know what you are using now, so we are at a bit of a disadvantage. There are "prosumer" camcorders like the standard definition Canon GL2 and Sony DCR-VX2100 and in high definition, there is the Sony HDR-FX1000. The biggest obvious difference is Prosumer cams use a 1/8" stereo mic jack instead of the pro-grade XLR connectors... You can use an XLR adapter like those from juicedLink or BeachTek if you use XLR-based mics.

I do not have a lot of money but I desperately need a professional camcorder for a low budget film that I am currently making. It does need to be of good quality and possibly in HD, but does anyone know where I can buy REALLY cheap ones? I don't care if they are second, third or even fourth hand, I just need one now!


A: you can try the canon xm2 they are getting cheaper now and have the professional look , or if you want high definition for the fraction on the price , and the ability to amp up the quality look more at a t-500 fro svp , these are sold on ebay as xm2 's will be , they have the quality , and will do everything you need for top end looking video

Where can I rent a professional camcorder for a cheap price?


A: If you are in a big city like New York, there are a lot of specialty camera shops like that rent cameras.

If you are not near a specialty store, look up videographer in your local phone book. They might have a camera you can rent for a very reasonable price. Depending on your project, you might get the owner or camera operator to come along and work the camera for the same price.
