What is the best electronic drum set for college?

Q: I am a senior in high school and I want an electronic drum set to accompany me to college so that I can put in headphones and not get kicked out of my dorm. Compactness and portability are necessary for me. I want to give my roommate part of the room too, and I need to be able to take it home over Christmas and stuff like that. I also don't want to go over $1000. What would be my best bet?

A: You are spoilt for choice there. The Roland Vdrum kits such as TD3 and TD6 are favourites. You may also find the newer TD9 as well. This is a great kit and pretty compact too. Go for mesh heads as these are quieter and feel better to play.

Alternatively if space is a problem, look at a compact pad such as the Roland SPD-S. or even go the laptop option using something like an Alesis Control pad. This includes BFD lite drum software and has foot trigger options as well. Heck...

I would love to know the same thing... Is there anyway to plug them into small speakers as well? NOT like a big guitar-amp speaker the Rolands are meant for.

I guess in terms of compactness and portability the Roland V-Drums Lite and the Yamaha DTXplorer are your best bet as you can somewhat fold them up. Having done some research prior to buying my current kit, based on the information I would choose the Yamaha. However, I have not tried them personally, so I cannot tell you how well these...

I have been playing the drums for 8 years. I am looking at getting an electronic drum kit but having no idea at any of the brands. I basically want to know all of the popular or good quality brands so I can have a look at them. Any suggestions?


A: Alesis is definitely the best. I have one and it's great.I hit pretty hard and it's still good.I got a warranty on mine so I can just tell them any replacement parts I need and they send them right away.

How can I increase the output of my electronic drum?

I have a drum module that I CAN NOT adjust the sensitivity on. I have an electronic kick drum that the drum module rarely picks up on even when I hammer down on it very hard. Is there a way that I can increase the electrical output of the kick drum itself? Remember the drum module itself can't be adjusted. So I need a more powerful signal sent from my electronic kick drum.


A: Unfortunately, depending on the manufacturer, you may not be able to adjust the sensitivity of the drum pad itself. Perhaps another solution would be to adjust your kick pedal, perhaps loosening up the tension on the springs. If you can't adjusting the velocity trigger level on the drum module, maybe you could raise the velocity of each note-on in your MIDI sequencer to trigger the sound module on playback.
