ok i have a sony reciever that i got with a more expensive sony hitp and i have a pair of older jbl 2500 bookshelf speakers that sounded really good with my old reciever and it had a nice full sound without a subwoofer.
now the jbls have great highs and good midrange but now low end i would think that they would have a fuller sound i dont know why no bass is going to them by the way i have a sonySTR-K675P reciever the speakers which came with my stereo are 6ohm and the jbls are 8ohm...
A: This will make a difference because the 6 Ohms rating is
actually lower wattage power at 8 Ohms so your JBLs are
drawing less power from your receiver. Another item that
you want to consider is that some Sony receivers are not
full range. In other words, instead of running full bandwidth
power (i.e. 20Hz - 20,000Hz), it's more like 40Hz-20,000Hz
and this will greatly hinder the bass performance in a loud-
speaker that can reproduce...

You will need some kind of receiver. You can get them cheap on ebay.
