I am a flautist looking for a community band or orchestra to join in the Los Angeles area?

Q: Does anyone know of any? I'd be intersted in chamber groups as well. Where could I find such information? I haven't played in a band/orchestra since college and would really like to play in an organized group again.

A: Try contacting many of the local college (both 2 and 4-year schools) music depts. If they don't have a community band, chances are there might be one rehearsing in their building that they know about.

i would love to be a conductor someday. i already know how to play piano, guitar, sax, and clarinet pretty well. i always wondered do i have to know how to play all instruments such as violin, cello, bassoon, oboe, trumpet..etc in order to conduct a band or orchestra? that would take many many years. my emphasis is on clarinet and sax. can someone help?


A: There is a difference between a conductor and a band/orchestra teacher. While almost all band/orchestra teachers also conduct - all conductors don't also teach.

A band/orchestra teacher does indeed need to know how to play every instrument. This will be part of the music education program and is called "methods" class. You won't be required to play them all well but you will have to be able to play everything. It doesn't take as long as you would...

I just graduated from high school, when I was in the band I would make stuff up on the marimba all the time. My band director told me I would be a very good composer. I just need to know what the best tools are to compose marching band music and orchestra music.

Saint Patrick's Day Parade '09

I'm a freshmen in high school and I'm really hoping to get into a UC (prefferably UCB). I'm pretty aware of what classes I have to take, but I didn't take Orchestra this year. In fact, I didn't take any performing/visual arts elective this year (very stupid). I have 3 years experience with the violin, although I'm pretty mediocre due to lack of practice. I was in the Orchestra in middle school, and I didn't enjoy it very much.
I'm thinking about joining...


A: Taking a class like orchestra just because you want it to look good on your transcript probably isn't a good idea, considering the amount of genuine motivation you need for enjoying such a class. If you really feel like you like playing the violin and want to get better, though, then go for it! If you can't fit it into your schedule, you can always take private lessons to improve or you can see if there are any after school clubs. My school had a quartet thing that I joined last year....
