Midland Two Way Radios good for 20 mile range?

Written by trunksca | Sunday, April 20, 2008

I have a company where my workers are spread out through out the city, the Midland two way radios have a range of 26 miles, or so the package says. I would like to know if these would be good for a 20 mile range to contact the workers?

A: The only way you can get this kind of range in a city is by using a repeater on a hilltop or tall building. The easiest way to do this is to go through a local 2-way radio shop that offers this kind of service. You pay a bit for the access but you don't have to try and license a frequency, install and maintain a facility at a hilltop, pay rent, etc. Another option, if you have company cell phones, is to get what they describe a p2t (push to talk) service on the cell phones. Which is better for a two way radio for skiing: Motorola or Midland?

Written by Nick M | Saturday, December 13, 2008

I'm looking for a good "walkie talkie" radio to take skiing with me to communicate in the back-country. Any ideas? Range and battery life are the more important issues for me I think.
Any help would be appreciated!

A: If you are referring to VHF radios, not FRPs, I have used both for on-hill coaching, and have found the Midland to have better battery life. Range is determined more by terrain, Midland offers an extended antenna (about 28" long) which will increase your range dramatically. The only drawback to Midland, I find it hard to push the Mic button with gloves on.
